One year ago, Fritz Kaegi was a political unknown who struck out to defeat one of the most powerful men in Cook County – Assessor Joe Berrios. Bolstered by his own deep pockets, key endorsements, and independent reports about the inequities of the county’s property tax system, Kaegi is now poised to take on the massive task of overhauling an office plagued with problems for decades. On this episode of The Daily Line’s Aldercast, reporter A.D. Quig talks to Kaegi about his successful run, his time in private finance, his upbringing in Hyde Park during the Harold Washington years, and how long it might take to truly reform Cook County’s property tax system.
