Last night’s 33rd Ward contest for Democratic Committeeman ended up with two precincts still uncounted and an undetermined number of vote-by-mail ballots uncounted. According to his daughter, 33rd Ward Ald. Deb Mell, Committeeman Mell has not conceded to challenger Aaron Goldstein and is awaiting final results. Unofficial results this morning showed a Goldstein with a 143 vote lead.

Board of Elections spokesman Jim Allen says vote-by-mail ballots (previously known as absentees) are not scheduled to be counted until Friday. And, until the counting begins, the Board is unable to provide a complete count. Until Friday, the Board will not make a determination of which received ballots were counted on election day and which still need to be counted.

However, as of 12:27 p.m. this afternoon, the Board of Elections is able to report that the 33rd Ward had 3,366 vote-by-mail applications with 2,819 returned. Additional ballots are expected to be received in the mail, with the vast majority coming in Friday.

The 1st Ward Democratic Committeeman contest is also close, with one precinct still to be counted. Alderman and incumbent Proco “Joe” Moreno ended the night with a 211 vote lead over challenger Maria Teresa Gonzalez, and declared victory on his Facebook page. In that ward, the Board of Elections reports 4,030 vote-by-mail applications and 3,421 returned so far.

Citywide, the Board reports 33,931 vote-by-mail applications and 8,814 ballots returned so far. Click for a complete ward-by-ward report.
